Gratitude On May Day

Labour Day!

Labour Day had been celebrated on different days in different countries.

Before labour day came into place – deaths, lengthy working hours, working weekends, rights violation, child labour, injuries and risky working conditions were common among labour class. During the rising industrialization in the nineteenth century, factory owners exploited the labours and forced them to work for 15 hours a day.

One fine day more than 3,00,000 workers walked off from the work and went out on strike for 8 working hours which was 1st May 1886 and also named as May Day. This was all started in Haymarket, Chicago which was also referred to as Haymarket affair.

The first of May is a national, public holiday in many countries across the world. This Haymarket affair is a lot tragic but this is where International Labour Day was born. In India, the first labour day was celebrated in Chennai on 1 May 1923. But what is the need for it? Why do we celebrate this underprivileged or under respected community?

This is the best time to answer WHY actually. During this lockdown, for the first time, we realize how helpful this class is to all of us. How they play a major role in our lives. How they make our lives easy and convenient so that we can lead to our dreams.

Those who still did not realize their importance, this is the perfect moment to do it now and forever. Covid 19 is at its peak and like doctors, paramedical staff, police departments, this community is also working as corona warriors risking their own lives for us. So, it’s our duty as responsible citizens to appreciate and respect them.

Just imagine your life without a garbage collector who collects garbage from your home/ building/apartment every day and dispose it off at the correct place. Imagine your life without all the vegetable vendors, milk vendors, and domestic help. It is difficult, right? As if they are the most important part of our daily lives and the fact is we conveniently ignore that.

Arthur William  Ward rightly said, “Feeling gratitude & not expressing it is like wrapping a gift and not giving it”. So Express your gratitude towards them and make this day truly memorable.

“Happy Labour Day”

“Thank you Corona Warriors”

As the events become customery, we often indulge in following protocols and tend to forget the origins and purpose of celebrating these events. Thank you for reminding us the importance of the international labor day through this nice article!

After reading your article, I realised that we simply celebrate holiday as ‘long weekends’ or a day off . We forget the sole purpose of these important and are ignorant of the beautiful stories behind it. Looking forward to more such stories
